2023 Department Day
On Thursday 21 September, at 2 p.m. at the San Luigi Gonzaga Hospital in Orbassano in the Seminar Room, the opening meeting of the Departmental Project of Excellence PUZZLE (Integrated approach to multimorbidity: basic, translational and clinical research and multidisciplinary education) was held.
The project aims to study one of the greatest challenges in medicine: multimorbidity, i.e. the presence of two or more long-term clinical conditions in a single patient, which has a major impact on people's quality of life as well as on public health management.
Patients with multimorbidity present a high degree of complexity in terms of prevention and clinical care, which makes traditional research on single diseases insufficient and highlights the absolute need to develop an approach that takes this complexity into account.
The main objective of the PUZZLE project is to make the Department of Clinical and Biological Sciences, which is characterised by a strong interdisciplinary approach, a national and international reference for research into multimorbidity and intervention and treatment strategies.
Thanks to the use of epidemiological and clinical databases, a new integrated model for the study, management and treatment of patients with high clinical complexity will be formulated, which can be flexibly applied to different disease complexes.
Fundamental to the formulation of the model will be the establishment of a certified biobank and an infrastructure for metabolomic and proteomic analyses.
This model will be enriched by the study of the biological mechanisms characterising the progression towards complexity and by the definition of new biomarkers and therapeutic targets, and subsequently tested on selected patient populations (nephropathic and rheumatological), in order to provide elements for developing innovative healthcare policies.
Finally, the project will improve the department's higher education activities, aimed at master's, doctoral and postgraduate students, as well as involving stakeholders, thanks to third mission activities, including the production of a MOOC (massive Online Open Course) on the topic of multimorbidity.
The Director of the Department, Prof. Massimo Terzolo, opened and closed the afternoon dedicated to the project of excellence, with speeches aimed at illustrating the different facets of the 'PUZZLE' project.
