ATLANTIS is within the scope of research activities corresponding to the ERC Life Sciences area.

The Centre was established to improve the research on the metabolic pathways and their interaction with inflammatory processes in the pathogenesis of cancer and chronic-degenerative diseases.

ATLANTIS will allow the acquisition of new scientific information useful to identify diagnostic and therapeutic targets suitable to be translated to the clinical practice. General goals of ATLANTIS are the development of new research activities and the valorization of pre-existing ones, promoting collaborations, within and outside the Centre.  The final goal is to make ATLANTIS a cornerstone for research on metabolism, able to attract both public and private funding, resulting in a synergy between the industrial and academic research.

ATLANTIS will be pivotal to improve the interplay with patient associations, in view of results that could be relevant to the clinical practice.

ATLANTIS arises from the collaboration of the following departments:

In particular, the Department of Clinical and Biological Sciences contributes to research with expertise in the field of metabolism and its relationship to disease.

Direttrice del Centro: Paola Costelli (appointed with DR. 1436 of 03/08/2023 for 2023/2025) - Department of Clinical and Biological Sciences

Comitato Scientifico del Centro:

Research technician of Atlantis

Technical Administrative Staff to support the Centre:

  • Giuseppina Santosuosso, Research Area - School of Medicine San Luigi
  • Alessandra Allione, Research Area - School of Medicine San Luigi
  • Maria Mari, Administration and Accounting Area - School of Medicine San Luigi
  • Elisabetta Madera, Support Area for Institutional Activities - School of Medicine San Luigi

  1. ATLANTIS promotes basic, translational and clinical research in the field of metabolism and inflammation, focusing on chronic-degenerative and oncological diseases. ATLANTIS aims to form a research network to favour scientific collaborations, the circulation of ideas and the best exploitation of human and material resources, also integrating non biomedical skills (computer science, mathematics, physics, chemistry) to encourage the development of new "enabling technologies".

  2. Objective of ATLANTIS is to pursue the identification of new biomarkers or clusters of biomarkers, useful for prevention, differential diagnostics, etiopathogenesis, prognosis, therapy and any further aspect of precision medicine. The Centre will take care of transferring the results of these research activities to current diagnostic and clinical practice.

  3. ATLANTIS will promote and develop high education activities within the PhD Schools, favoring the internationalization process as much as possible through a regular exchange of students and visiting professors. The Center also aims to encourage any other type of training such as the organization of seminars, scientific conferences, educational courses, and to promote cultural exchanges with other national and international research centers. Furthermore, Atlantis will carry out dissemination activities, aiming to engage the general public and patient associations.

  4. ATLANTIS will foster collaborations with biotech and start-up companies with the aim of providing services on the one hand, and developing common projects on the other. When possible, the results will be patented and eventually exploited by industry.
